After Tooth Extraction

It is important to follow the instructions below to speed healing. Note that some discomfort and swelling are normal after surgery.

Day of surgery

  1. Keep the compresses in your mouth for one to two hours, applying firm pressure. Change the pads every half hour, as needed.
  2. Keep your head elevated at all times.
  3. Apply ice to your cheek at regular intervals (20 minutes of ice every hour).
  4. If bleeding occurs, bite down on a gauze pad or lightly moistened tea bag for 20 minutes.
  5. Bleeding and colored saliva are normal after surgery.
  6. Limit physical activity and rest.

Don'ts

  1. Don’t disturb the blood clot as it helps with healing.
  2. Don’t eat anything before the bleeding stops.
  3. Don’t drink through a straw.
  4. Don’t rinse your mouth or spit.
  5. Don’t smoke or drink alcohol.
  6. Avoid hard foods.
  7. Don’t brush near the area of the extracted tooth for the first 72 hours.

Pain

  1. If the pain is uncomfortable, take the medication you were prescribed.
  2. If you were prescribed antibiotics, take them for the full course even if symptoms improve.

Food

  1. Eat only soft foods or lukewarm liquids the day of your extraction. Resume normal eating as soon as you can.

The day after until full healing

  1. Rinse your mouth three times a day with a warm salt water solution (2 ml or ½ tsp of salt in 250 ml or 1 cup of water).
  2. Brush your teeth and floss daily to remove plaque and ensure the best long-term results. Don’t brush near the area of the extracted tooth for the first 72 hours.
  3. Avoid hard foods (nuts, candy, ice).
  4. You may have trouble speaking and notice extra saliva. This should improve within a week.
  5. Bruising may appear and should fade within five to seven days.
  6. You may have difficulty opening your mouth. This should improve in four to five days.
  7. If pain increases after three days, call our office.

You will feel better after a few days and can resume your normal activities. If you experience heavy bleeding, pain, continued swelling for two to three days or a negative reaction to the medication, call us.
